Ionic recently announced an $8.5 million round of funding.
The company, which is based in downtown Madison, is the creator of the popular software development kit (SDK) used to build mobile apps. Ionic has differentiated itself from similar software by integrating their SDK with HTML5 and the Angular JS Javascript framework. By using a web-based framework for the SDK, Ionic makes it very easy for developers to create mobile apps from web content. Additionally, a web-based framework opens the door for many more developers to create apps because they do not need to use complex languages like Swift or Objective C.
Since the company’s inception in 2011, over 2 million apps have been created using the Ionic framework. The current round of funding will be used to boost sales and continue building out commercial services that go along with the open-sourced SDK. You can read more about Ionic’s raise here.
